White People Love the Y-M-C-A

A particular skit by Canadian-Indian comedian Russell Peters came to mind this weekend as friends and I traveled to and from Khao Sok National Park.  In this skit, Peters pokes fun of and also celebrates the fact that white people love audience participation songs, in particular, the ‘Y-M-C-A.’  Among a crowd of young, vivacious, inebriated (and largely white) 20-somethings this weekend, I proudly performed the ‘Y-M-C-A’ and in my state, considered Peters an anthropologist of note.

This past weekend, Morgan and I traveled with eighteen other English teachers to visit Khao Sok.  The plan?  To celebrate a 25th birthday and to spend a night on the water in floating bungalows. Throw in some drinks, kayaks and guitar playing and you could easily say it was two days of just being young.

Morning sunshine over the floating bungalows.

Just appreciating being 23 years old.
